In the northern part of the island, comprising a large area of dunes, a lavascape, and a volcanic cone (Montaña Roja), is the Corralejo nature reserve. Somewhat threatened by human intrusion, it still has a considerable sabulous habitat with plants such as the sea-grape (Zygophyllum fontanesii), shrubby seablite (Suaeda vera) and amaranthaceae (Traganum moquinii), as well as having the best colony of houbary bustards (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae) on the island.
