South Route
Leaving the Jandía beaches where you can see the Macizo with its 807 m. high peak (the highest on the island), you get to Cañada del Río (Costa Calma), an important tourist resort, and then Istmo de la Pared, a geological form where fossilised sands have accumulated, and which used to be the border between the aboriginal kingdoms of Maxorata and Jandía. Continue on towards Pájara, where a visit to the church is a must, with its porch with its Aztec-like characteristics, and its baroque style altarpiece, both of unquestionable artistic value. Then, follow the route towards Tuineje, where the historic battle of Tamasite took place against the English corsairs, and every year, there is a long-established reconstruction. In the old quarter of Tuineje, there are fine examples of the Berber architectural style, a result of the settling of Moorish slaves in the area. Heading south, you come to Gran Tarajal, the island's second largest town and the most important commercial port in the area.

From here and going southwest, you reach Tarajalejo, a pretty fishing village and tourist resort, and La Lajita, where there is an amazing display of cacti and birds, and where you go for a camel ride, to end the route by returning to the marvellous Jandía beaches.
